One call transfer center at WMC accepts a record number of patient transfers from hospitals throughout the Hudson Valley region and beyond
Westchester Medical Center (WMC) today announced that it had recently accepted its 10,000th patient transfer from more than 30 hospitals in the Hudson Valley region and beyond through the medical center’s new One Call Transfer Center.
The 10,000 patient transfers took place over a 21-month* period between May 2005 when the Transfer Center opened and February 2007 and included transfers in 2006 from hospitals in Westchester (2775), Putnam (234), Dutchess (415), Rockland (429), Orange (1757), Ulster (319) and Sullivan (411). Counties as well as Connecticut and New Jersey – indicating the critical role that the Medical Center plays in the Hudson Valley region.

We are continually looking to improve upon the services we provide to our patients as well as the referring physicians and community hospitals,” said Michael Israel, President and CEO of Westchester Medical Center. “By simplifying the transfer process we are able to provide a much faster, more efficient service to our patients and our health care partners throughout the Hudson Valley region and beyond.”
Westchester Medical Center receives emergent specialty referrals from a network of physicians for their patients who require advanced care for services in cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric critical care, neurosurgery, trauma, oncology, liver transplant, orthopedics, burns, as well as other services.
One call to the Transfer Center by the referring physician is all it takes to begin the process including immediate access to, and consultation with, a receiving physician at Westchester Medical Center. Reducing the operational aspect of a transfer to just one call, allows medical specialists to focus on the patient and the clinical aspect of the transfer. This one call Transfer Center Coordinators also assist with arranging either ground or air transportation for the emergent patient – patient data indicates that 83% of all transfer patients required or requested transportation assistance.

*In 2005 the Medical Center received a total of 3223 patient transfers through the Transfer Center, 6340 in 2006 and 540 through February 28, 2007 for a total of 10,103 patient transfers.
